Waynesville: Welcome to the Best in the Carolinas!

Waynesville, the county seat of Haywood County, is a unique mountain town located in the heart of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. It is also surrounded by the Pisgah National Forest and Shining Rock Wildness area which provides a beautiful setting for its artistic community to hand-craft their work. Downtown Waynesville, in turn, provides a rustic elegant setting for shops to display their fine arts and crafts along side gourmet coffee shops, bakeries and causal-fine dining restaurants. When you visit you will discover many beautiful works along Main Street from contemporary to traditional blending the present with Waynesville’s historic early 19th century past.

Maggie Valley, so named after the child of the community’s first postmaster, was settled along a path to Cherokee across Soco Gap. Now, Soco Road (HWY 19) is still a path to the Cherokee Nation and one of the four accesses to the Blue Ridge Parkway in the county. Maggie Valley is a destination in its own right and a great place for families to live, vacation and to enjoy the mountain vista’s and streams. There are many entertainment opportunities including Eagle’s Nest-Thunder Ridge, Carolina Nights, Stomping Grounds, and Saratoga’s. If you visit in the winter you may want to hit the slopes of Cataloochee Ski Resort or take a slippery ride at Tony’s Tube World at the foot of the old Ghost Town.

Another jewel of the county is Lake Junaluska Assembly, the conference center for the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. The 200-acre lake is surrounded by the Assembly grounds, private homes, bed and breakfasts, and a walking trail. It is a place that provides a great environment for a devotional experience during the many conferences throughout the year.

Canton, or Paper Town, lies along the banks of the Pigeon River and is home to the County’s largest industry, Blue Ridge Papers, Inc. Canton also has two other industrial parks that provide jobs and opportunity for growth for new industrial and manufacturing ventures. There is also the Canton Historical Museum that tells the story of the political, environmental and war history of the town. Located just across the street is the recently restored Colonial Theater which plays host to concerts, plays and readings on a vintage stage.

Other parts of Haywood County include; Balsam known for Balsam Gap the “Gateway to the West” where pioneers such as Davie Crockett and Daniel Boone made their way West when the American frontier ended here; Clyde, where the “Big Gun” is the center-piece of town. Cruso, along HWY 276, offers nine miles of friendly people with the exception of one “old crab” and leads to another Parkway access.  Bethel, Crabtree and the North sections of Haywood County are primarily agricultural and are stunningly picturesque.
